What is Committed use and reserved instances?
Committed-use discounts and reserved instances exchange a time or spend commitment for lower prices on matching usage, and some reservations can also provide capacity benefits.
The expensive mistake
Treating a discounted monthly equivalent as cancellable month to month, or treating every commitment as the same product. Unused commitment can erase the discount, and a billing discount does not always reserve capacity.
Where it appears on your bill
The commitment or reservation charge is billed under its purchase terms, while matching usage receives discounted or covered treatment.
Worked example
The dated example uses Cloud 66 Team at $47/month equivalent on annual billing versus $59 month to month. A full year is 12 x $47 = $564 instead of 12 x $59 = $708, a $144 saving only if the buyer actually needs the service for the year. The customer cloud bill remains separate.
